Theology and Spirituality in Times of Rupture | An Illustration of a Presentation by Diana Butler-Bass

In September, 2021, Diana Butler-Bass, Brian McLaren, and Tripp Fuller held an online class to recognize the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and called it "Oh God, What Now?" I was especially captivated by Diana's presentation on the major ruptures in the last 150 years of Western Society that reshaped our culture. Whenever I am captivated by a presentation I have to draw it. This was no exception. At that point this was simply a single illustration. I shared it with Diana and she liked it a lot.

In January of 2025 I parsed out the various sections of this illustration and turned it into a PowerPoint presentation for a class I was teaching. I shared it with Diana. She responded that now, post 2024 election, we have followed the violent tribalism arrow of the original illustration and have moved into a new cultural shift. She calls it "The Culture of Submission." So, I added the last slide and shared it with her.

In February, 2025, Diana used this PowerPoint in a presentation called "How Did We Get Here? The Bigger Picture" and graciously credited me for the illustration and linked to my website. I decided to offer the PowerPoint as a free download. Enjoy! You can watch her presentation HERE.
